SaferVPN Overview

SaferVPN is a VPN service based in the United States that has recently improved on a number of metrics, and now offers a level of service that competes with the biggest players in the market. This VPN is particularly easy to use, making it a great choice for beginners, although it is suitable for more advanced users also. You can get a SaferVPN trial for free, with access to full features for 24 hours, which is unusual in the industry. SaferVPN’s biggest selling point is its speed, with excellent upload and download times. It has upgraded its security features, and while server locations are somewhat limited, servers are available for all major countries.

Things we like

The company offers a 30 daymoney-back guarantee if you’re not satisfied

Super-fast speeds, with no difference compared to not using a VPN

SaferVPN offers a 24 hour free trial, so you can experience everything the VPN has to offer without putting any money down

The Chrome extension makes it even faster and less painless to connect to a VPN

Things we didn't like

There is a limited server location selection

Because SaferVPN is a US-based company, the VPN is slightly more susceptible to restrictions on privacy

Speed & Performance

SpeedVPN has recently made improvements to its servers, and is now one of the fastest VPN options out there. On average, connecting to SaferVPN servers takes less than 10 seconds, and there is no difference in SaferVPN download or upload speeds as compared to not using a VPN. Most of its servers have extremely low latency, which means you won’t notice any lag on even the most bandwidth-hungry websites and apps.

Ping time is 4ms, which makes SaferVPN an excellent choice for streaming. Because it offers both high download speeds as well as low ping times, SaferVPN servers retrieve data quickly, which makes for smooth streaming. This is a VPN that works with Netflix, although at present only if you use the US servers.

On the flipside, upload speeds are particularly high, which is crucial for gaming and file sharing. Torrenting is available on SaferVPN’s Netherlands server. There are no bandwidth limits or download caps, so it’s excellent for those who are particularly heavy internet users.

A particularly useful feature is the Chrome extension, which connects you to the VPN with one click, making unblocking content even easier and faster.

SaferVPN has introduced a number of new privacy features, which help to mitigate the fact that the company is based in the United States, and therefore sits under the jurisdiction of a legal system that has a poor track record on privacy issues.

It doesn’t log any of your browsing data or other online activities. However, SaferVPN does collect metadata on session dates and times, as well as how much bandwidth you used, and which country you are based in, which they do in order to manage server network performance.

The VPN uses AES-256 encryption, which is proven to be completely unbreakable. SaferVPN’s creators have introduced a kill switch, which automatically blocks all internet traffic if your VPN connection fails. There is also an interesting new feature called “Automatic Wi-Fi Protection.” When your phone or other device connects to a public, unsecured Wi-Fi connection, the SaferVPN application will automatically connect the device to a secure and encrypted VPN server, without you having to manually press the button to connect. That makes it a good choice for travelers who are using Wi-Fi connections that they don’t trust.

You can also pay for your SaferVPN download with Bitcoin, PayPal, and an in-house anonymous payment method, which ensures even greater privacy for those who don’t want their identities exposed online.

The service does block DNS leaks, which nullify your anonymity by sending a web page request to your internet service provider instead of to an anonymous DNS server through the VPN. However, unlike some other VPN providers, it does not route your data through its own DNS servers, which would provide greater privacy.

Server Locations

SaferVPN has fewer server locations than most of the other big players – 35 compared to ExpressVPN’s 145, for example. That being said, the most popular destinations are all covered, including the US, the UK, Canada, Australia, South Africa, and a selection of European and Asian countries. This is important if there are country-specific streaming networks that you want access to: it’s one of the best VPNs for Netflix (the US version), and gives you access to services like BBC iPlayer, Foxtel Now and Stan in Australia, and CraveTV in Canada.

Despite the small number of server locations, SaferVPN servers perform well, especially since the company added a number of new servers to its network, bringing its total server count above 400 globally. The more servers, the fewer people competing for access to each server, and therefore the faster your speed will be. The services does not, however, feature dynamic server switching, which improves performance even further.

Customer Support

SaferVPN are known for their quick customer support. Their live chat representatives take just a few seconds to answer even complex queries, although their responses are somewhat canned. It takes them a little longer to respond via email, around two hours, which is still quicker than some other providers.

The company’s website features a knowledge base, which is helpful in answering questions about installation, manual configuration, and troubleshooting, including specific information relating to each platform, and questions like how to unblock Netflix. The information does not go as deep, however, as some power users might like.

SaferVPN is available on a monthly rate of $9.99, which is at the top of the price scale compared to other VPNs. However, if you sign up for a year, the price drops a full fifty percent, to only $4.99 a month. If you go for the two year plan, you get an even better deal, paying only $3.49 a month.

Bottom Line

This is the VPN to choose if you’re after blazing fast speeds, and are a frequent gamer and streamer, but also care about privacy and access to the most popular server locations.
