ExpressVPN Overview

ExpressVPN is a premium VPN service, preferring to rely on the quality of their service instead of cutting costs. They’re still affordable, but you’ll never face any of the typical issues with lag and security that you may find with a cheaper VPN.

Things we like

As you'll be dealing with them solely in an online capacity, it's important to note that ExpressVPN’s customer service response times are some of the best on the market.

The speed of their servers mean that using four simultaneous connections is viable, as long as your connection is fast enough. ExpressVPN download speeds are also notably faster than the norm.

ExpressVPN have sleek and intuitive clients and apps for a range of devices, making it easy to switch between multiple platforms.

It's probably the best VPN for Netflix, with no chance of being locked out.

We've mentioned it a few times in our ExpressVPN review, but it's worth highlighting that their money-back offer lacks many of the annoying stipulations you'll find with a number of competitors. (Some cap trials with a data limit, or rescind any guarantee based on usage time.)

Things we didn't like

ExpressVPN does not have any servers optimized for Tor private browser.

It is a bit more expensive than other VPN providers and there is no free trial option.

Speed & Performance

For intensive tasks like downloading torrents, streaming videos, gaming, and more, ExpressVPN is perfect because of the speed and performance they offer.

Their apps are intuitive and slick, and you can leave it to do its thing in the background with little user input.

You also won’t see a major dip in connection speeds while using ExpressVPN. Their premium servers make a real difference, and they outclass the majority of the competition by a fair margin.

It’s also arguably the best VPN for Netflix. The streaming service have taken to blocking IP addresses used by popular VPNs, and some providers have given up on accessing Netflix content completely.

(ExpressVPN are still holding out for now, and they’re continuing to add more servers as time goes by.)

Performance-wise, it’s great for P2P sharing and other intensive tasks, while reliability is another bonus. You’ll have no trouble while using ExpressVPN, and it’s widely recognized as one of the fastest VPNs that money can buy.

ExpressVPN can be trusted with your personal data. The VPN provider has separate laws which were enacted in BVI territory. This means they’re not a part of the “14-eyes” network of global intelligence agencies, even if their namesake raises suspicion by association. The ExpressVPN Terms of Service state;

“We do not collect logs of your activity, including no logging of browsing history, traffic destination, data content, or DNS queries. We also never store connection logs, meaning no logs of your IP address, your outgoing VPN IP address, connection timestamp, or session duration.”

So they can’t be leaned on, and they have no relevant data to hand over anyway. Encryption comes in the form of a variety of protocols, using the near uncrackable AES-256 (Advanced Encryption Standard) keys to keep your devices safe.

One feature ExpressVPN offers that we were impressed with is a kill switch for further privacy. If your VPN drops for some reason, it will make sure your real IP address is not exposed. This is especially great if you are doing something that is restricted in the country you reside in, such as using popular social media sites in China.

We were particularly impressed with their high level of security, earning close to top marks.

Server Locations

They have numerous server locations which can be used to access a host of TV and online services worldwide. As well as virtual servers, ExpressVPN also have multiple physical locations in countries such as the US, UK, Canada and Australia. (Physical servers generally have improved connection times.)

ExpressVPN servers can be used for a range of online services, including unblocking the BBC and ITV from the UK, or watching NBC and Fox outside of the US. It’s also possible to access foreign language channels, such as France’s Canal Plus, or any version of Netflix.

As well as the more popular locations, they also have servers in Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and India. It’s a great mix from around the globe, ensuring a decent connection from anywhere.

ExpressVPN servers are some of the best and most reliable, earning full marks.

Customer Support

Customer support can be hit and miss with VPN providers, but that can’t be said for ExpressVPN. They have live chat support available 24/7, so any issues will be resolved speedily. When we tested it out, we got through to a human instantly.

Wait times can sometimes take at least a few hours with competitors, so it’s a major plus point for ExpressVPN. If you do run into any issues, or you just want to ask a question, it’s quick and easy to get an instant reply.

They’re perhaps a little too eager to direct users to their extensive range of guides and how-to articles, but it’s still much better than the vast majority of providers.

It’s by no means the cheapest available, but it’s still highly affordable while offering great value for money. For a premium service, it’s in line with similar VPNs, but you can’t do better for speed and security.

Their one month plan is a little more expensive than the norm at $12.95, but you are covered with their 30-day money-back guarantee.

There are three options in terms of pricing, with three months free if you go for their 12-month deal.

  • 1 month: $12.95
  • 6 months: $9.99 per month
  • 15 months: $6.67 per month *includes three free months

Bottom Line

ExpressVPN is one of the best providers available, with no real flaws and a strong overall service. Constant improvements have eliminated any issues, leaving a streamlined service that has something to offer for any user.

If you’re having issues with your current VPN, or you just want one of the best, we’d strongly recommend ExpressVPN for torrenting, gaming, streaming, and general internet use.
