Setup and Interface
PrivateVPN is available for Windows, Mac, iOS and Android. Regardless of client, you’ll receive an easy-to-use client that allows you to connect quickly.
After singing up for service, you can download and install the client. If you have problems with this, you can always check their support page or even have support install the program for you. Once the program is installed, you can go ahead and launch it. You’ll be greeted with a simple interface with options to connect. You can change the location and connection type directly from the main dashboard.
You can access billing information, settings and Connection Guard via tab buttons on the left hand side. In the upper left hand corner, there’s a button for live support. This is a nice feature as you don’t have to go back to the website to get support.
Features and Specifications
PrivateVPN offers all of the normal features you’d expect from a VPN plus some you don’t see everywhere. That starts with “High-Quality Network” servers that provide superior speeds. Supposedly, PrivateVPN purchases internet capacity direct from IP transit providers for their network, improving overall speeds.
They also have a kill switch feature called Connection Guard built into the program. One added feature of the kill switch is that you can specify specific programs to be included in the kill switch protocol, ensuring you don’t leak out data over the internet should the VPN get disconnected.
Everything we tried with this service went through without a hitch. We were able to easily access georestricted content on the servers we connected to. Also, we had no problems connecting and using Hulu, Netflix, Twitter and other online streaming services.
If you use BitTorrent or other P2P software, you’ll have no problems on this network in general. Our one suggestion would be to restrict your BitTorrent usage to server locations that are historically torrent friendly, such as Sweden. That way you avoid any complications.
You won’t have any problems with speed using PrivateVPN. In our testing, we experienced only small reductions in speed, but you’re going to always get that using a VPN. The litmus test was streaming video and we were able to stream 4K video without any issues whatsoever. Downloads speeds were also fantastic.
PrivateVPN is a small network of 40 servers located in 29 countries. Some of the more exotic locations compared to other services are Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, South Korea and Russia.
One thing we appreciated while checking out this service is that their website fully discloses the server locations before you sign up. They also disclose that some of their servers, like the one in China, only support certain encryption protocols due to certain firewall restrictions in those areas.
If you want superior security while using VPN, stick with providers that offer AES 256-bit encryption. This is the same type of encryption that the military and government uses, so it will certainly protect your devices.
In terms of logging, PrivateVPN has a strict no logs policy. They only thing they store on their servers is your email address. That’s one advantage of working with a provider based in Sweden.
PrivateVPN offers three pricing points for their service. You can start with their monthly plan for just $8.95 a month. If you’d like a longer term, you have a 90-day or annual options. Their 90-day plan is $21.95 a month while annual access is just $71.40. When you’re ready to signup and pay, PrivateVPN accepts credit cards, PayPal and bitcoin.
After signing up, make sure you test drive the service quickly because they only offer a 7-day Money Back Guarantee on their services.
We started to become impressed with PrivateVPN’s support options as soon as we loaded the site as there was a highly visible live chat button on the left side of the screen. Digging further we discovered that PrivateVPN offers awesome self-help services and much more.
Their website has a support page complete with a FAQ and a Getting Started section that walks you through setting up their software. If you need additional help, you can contact them via email or the aforementioned live chat.
PrivateVPN is one of the few services that also offers remote control support. Just download and install TeamViewer on your computer and give support your TeamViewer ID. They will then login and solve any issue you’re having remotely. This is perfect for those lacking in technical skills.
Many VPN providers claim to offer superior service but usually fall short in key areas. PrivateVPN offers amazing service and ticks all of the boxes for those of you who need secure browsing, access to georestricted content, and the ability to use the internet without restrictions.
If you ever have a problem, their support team has you back and can even fix your problems for you. Not only should this service be on your short list for providers, it should be at the top.
